The King of Fruits, and the most divisive food on Earth. A spiked football that smells like — depending on who you ask — custard, onions, gym socks, or a gas leak, and tastes, past the smell, like rich sweet almond custard. Banned from hotels and subways across Asia, and worshipped by everyone who acquires the taste.

Identifying

  • a large fruit armored in hard, sharp spines, green-brown, heavy as a bowling ball
  • splits along seams into pods of pale-yellow custardy flesh around big seeds
  • the smell arrives before the fruit does — pungent, penetrating, unmistakable
  • soft, creamy, almost fatty texture inside, nothing like the armored shell

Facts

  • the aroma comes from dozens of compounds including the same ones in onions and rotten eggs — science confirms it really is that complex
  • hotels, airlines, and transit across Southeast Asia post "no durian" signs
  • pairs traditionally with sticky rice and coconut cream; the flavor wins where the smell scares
