Seattle’s training mountain. Three thousand feet, no apologies, conditioning for everything else on this page. The haystack scramble at top is optional and should stay that way in the wet.

Why choose this trail

Steep conditioning close to Seattle. The main trail climbs steadily through forest to an open bench below the Haystack. The exposed Haystack scramble is optional and outside the ordinary hiking route.

Landscape & habitat

Low-elevation Douglas-fir forest grades into cooler montane habitat. The mountain is part of the Mountains to Sound Greenway and supports wildlife despite intense recreation pressure.

Access, passes & rules

A Discover Pass is required for state-land parking. The main lot and overflow plan can change, so consult DNR before a peak-period visit.

Conditions & hazards

This is a strenuous climb even though it is close to town. Wet rock makes the Haystack substantially more dangerous.
