Cascade Pass

The classic for a reason: switchbacks with manners, then a pass that opens onto a wall of glaciers. Best payoff-per-step in the range. Go early — the lot fills by eight.

Why choose this trail

A first big North Cascades panorama. The trail climbs a long, well-graded set of forest switchbacks before breaking into open subalpine country at Cascade Pass. Turn around at the pass for the listed day hike; Sahale Arm is a much harder extension.

Landscape & habitat

This is a sharp ecological climb from western hemlock and silver fir forest into heather meadows beneath heavily glaciated peaks. Marmots, pika and mountain goats use the open slopes, so food and distance from wildlife both matter.

Access, passes & rules

North Cascades National Park does not charge an entrance fee, but Cascade River Road is long, partly gravel and subject to seasonal damage. Check the park road and trail status before leaving Marblemount.

Conditions & hazards

Snow can linger well into summer. Steep side slopes, changing mountain weather and a crowded trailhead reward an early start and a conservative turnaround.
