Devil's Urn
A goblet of black leather rising out of the spring leaf litter. The devil's urn is one of the first fungi of the year, a cup fungus that morel hunters learn to love because it fruits in the same woods at the same time — spot the urns and the morels are usually close.
Identifying
- a deep black-to-dark-brown goblet or urn, leathery, on a short stalk
- ragged, toothed rim when young, opening into a wide cup with age
- grows from buried hardwood sticks and roots, often in small groups
- puffs a faint cloud of spores when tapped on a dry day
Facts
- a classic morel indicator — same early-spring window, same hardwood ground
- technically edible-when-cooked but tough and flavorless; it's a finding, not a feast
- one of the earliest signs the forest's fungal year has started
