Blue River Shrimp
A freshwater river prawn with startling blue claws — the kind pulled from warm Southeast Asian rivers and dropped straight into a chili boil. Long-armed, sweet-meated, and a world away from the cold-water spot prawns of the Pacific.
Identifying
- translucent body with long, slender claws washed electric blue
- a long saw-toothed rostrum between the eyes, like all true prawns
- much longer arms than a sea prawn — the big river species carry oversized pincers
- freshwater habitat: rivers, streams, flooded fields, never the sea as adults
Facts
- the giant river prawns in this family are among the largest freshwater shrimp on Earth
- they migrate downstream to brackish water to breed, then the young climb back up
- the blue is structural color in the shell; it dulls to orange the moment it hits hot water
