Snake Fruit
Named for its skin, not its taste. Salak, or snake fruit, wears a perfect reddish-brown scaled hide that peels off like a reptile shedding — and underneath sits crisp, ivory flesh that's tart, sweet, and weirdly apple-meets-pineapple. A palm fruit that looks like it belongs in a terrarium.
Identifying
- teardrop fruit clad in glossy brown scales like snakeskin, tipped with a sharp point
- peel the papery scaled skin to find firm ivory-cream lobes around a large seed
- grows in clusters at the base of a very spiny palm
- crisp, dense flesh — nothing juicy, almost like a firm apple
