Wild Strawberry
Tiny, and worth every minute of stooping. A wild strawberry is a fingernail-sized version of the grocery fruit with ten times the flavor packed in — one of the great small rewards of the trail. You will never fill a basket; you fill your mouth as you find them.
Identifying
- a miniature red strawberry, rarely bigger than a fingertip, seeds on the surface
- classic three-part toothed leaves, low to the ground, spreading by runners
- small white five-petaled flowers with a yellow center
- the whole plant is a low mat in sun — trailsides, meadows, old clearings
Facts
- the wild species are the genetic ancestors of every giant grocery strawberry
- pound for pound far more intense than the cultivated fruit — all flavor, no water
- birds and mice race you to them, so ripe ones vanish fast; check sunny edges first
