Why Anacortes works
Anacortes is the practical mainland base for many San Juans trips. WDFW identifies Washington Park near the ferry terminal as a major launch, while noting that launches can be busy and parking limited.
Starting on the mainland gives you options, but it can also tempt a long crossing into weather that was not present at the ramp. Judge the route by the most exposed leg, not the first mile.
Treat the crossing as a current gate
Rosario Strait and the passes can produce strong current, standing waves, and wind chop. Plan the outbound and return separately; a comfortable morning window may not exist in the afternoon.
Ferry lanes and commercial traffic require a clear watch and predictable course. Do not stop to fish where navigation needs your full attention.
