A bank in moving open water
Hein Bank rises beneath exposed water and can gather bait, salmon, and halibut opportunity. WDFW notes halibut fishing in water reaching roughly 300 feet and identifies nearby Middle Bank as another option.
The same openness that makes the bank productive makes it unforgiving. Strong current, limited shelter, shipping traffic, fog, and a long return can turn a marginal forecast into the only fact that matters.
Fish the condition, not the reputation
Choose a tide that lets the crew control gear and boat position. For bottomfish, slack-water timing reduces scope and improves contact; for salmon, current direction shapes which edge of the bank fishes cleanly.
If you cannot hold the boat safely or maintain situational awareness, the fishing window is closed even when the legal season is open.
