Area 7, but not always the same rule
Bellingham Bay sits inside Marine Area 7, yet its salmon rules can differ from the rest of the area. Read the Bellingham Bay line in the annual pamphlet and check emergency changes rather than applying a San Juan Islands rule by memory.
WDFW describes Chinook and coho moving through the bay toward local hatchery and river systems, with chum returning annually and pink salmon present in odd-numbered years. Seasons and retention still decide what may be targeted or kept.
A useful weather alternative
The bay can provide a more protected option than exposed island banks, but shallow water, river outflow, commercial traffic, and local wind still deserve a complete plan. Protected does not mean consequence-free.
Watch for bait and surface activity, respect terminal-area boundaries, and leave working wildlife room.
