Texas saltwater rules depend on the species, date, water and license. Use this field checklist to reach the official answer quickly instead of trusting an old screenshot or an undated social post.

Before the first cast
- Carry the required Texas fishing license and saltwater endorsement unless a current exemption applies.
- Open the current Texas Outdoor Annual and confirm the exact species, minimum or maximum length, daily bag, possession limit and any tagging rule.
- Check for closures, special seasons and temporary actions on the day you fish; flounder, red drum and offshore species deserve extra attention.
- Know whether the boat is in Texas state water or federal water before keeping an offshore fish.
Measure and document
Keep a rigid measuring device where it can be reached without digging through the boat. Measure fish the way TPWD defines total length, and release questionable fish promptly with wet hands and minimal air exposure.
Red drum and other tagged fish have rules beyond a simple bag count. Read the current official species line before using a tag or retaining an oversized fish.
Harvest is not automatic
- A legal fish may still be a poor table choice or a valuable breeder; selective harvest is part of the field method.
- Shellfish areas can close for health reasons. Confirm the exact harvest area and current public-health status before collecting oysters.
- Stingrays, sharks and unfamiliar fish require safe handling and positive identification before any harvest decision.
