Lower Laguna Madre Fishing Guide
Best for Spotted seatrout, red drum, flounder and shallow-water patterns
Water Clear, hypersaline grass flats and channels
The Lower Laguna Madre is a shallow grass-flat system where wind, water clarity, bait and depth changes usually matter more than a secret waypoint. This guide gives a durable way to read it.

Read the flat
Start with three questions: where is the cleanest moving water, where is bait being compressed, and where is a nearby depth change? Grass edges, potholes, drains and channel shoulders give fish a travel lane without requiring a published hotspot.
A light wind can help by breaking the surface and moving food. Strong wind stacks water and mud on one shoreline while draining or clearing another, so choose the launch and return route around the forecast.
Core targets
- Spotted seatrout: work grass edges, potholes and bait schools; low-light topwater can reveal fish before switching to subsurface presentations.
- Red drum: look for wakes, pushes, tails and nervous bait in very shallow water, then back off and make a quiet presentation.
- Flounder: focus on drains, channel edges and places where current carries prey past a defined ambush line.
- Black drum and sheepshead: slow down around shell, pilings and structure; natural baits and precise placement often matter more than speed.
Protect the nursery
- Avoid cutting prop scars through seagrass; use marked channels, idle depth and a pole or trolling motor where appropriate.
- Do not crowd feeding fish or other anglers. A wide, quiet approach preserves the school and makes better footage.
- Pack out line and soft-plastic fragments, and use tackle sized to land fish without an exhausting fight.
