Four Waters, One Island

Pick the water that fits the wind, swell, craft and target—not the water that looked best yesterday.

bay

Lower Laguna Madre

Shallow grass, potholes, drains and channel edges for spotted seatrout, red drum, flounder and black drum.

shore

Isla Blanca & the Jetty

Structure, pass current and shore access, with slick rock, swell and ship traffic built into every decision.

gulf

Beach & Surf

Troughs, bar cuts and moving bait for pompano, whiting, ladyfish and passing predators when the surf cooperates.

paddle

South Bay

Remote shallow habitat, black mangrove edge and seagrass best approached quietly—with a real return plan.

pier

Night Lights

Pier and dock lights can gather bait and predators. Confirm access, hours and legal gear before setting up.

offshore

Beyond the Pass

Snapper and pelagic opportunity adds federal-water rules, weather exposure and a much larger safety margin.

The Main Targets

A seasonal starting point, never proof that retention is open today.

grass & potholes

Spotted Seatrout

Follow bait, depth changes and clean moving water. Low-light surface activity can reveal a school before it goes quiet.

shallow flats

Red Drum

Look for wakes, pushes, tails and nervous bait. Read the current TPWD drum limits and tag rules before retaining one.

Official drum rules →
drains & edges

Flounder

An ambush fish that rewards current, channel shoulders and bait moving through a defined pinch point. Special seasons can apply.

Rules checklist →
shell & structure

Black Drum

Slow presentations around shell, pilings and channels. Big fish deserve careful handling even when a legal option exists.

Official drum rules →
clear surf

Pompano & Whiting

Fish the trough and cuts instead of automatically casting to the horizon. Small natural baits and clean water can be enough.

Surf planning →
mixed water

Ladyfish & Stingrays

Hard-fighting, common surprises. Positive identification, safe release tools and deliberate table decisions matter.

Catch to Kitchen

Only positively identified, legally retained, properly chilled catch belongs in the kitchen.

Blackened Gulf Fish Tacos

Use a firm legal fillet, a hot skillet, cabbage, lime and a cooling crema. Do not let the recipe drive the harvest decision.

Cast-Iron Trout with Citrus

Dry the fillet well, crisp it in a thin film of oil, then finish with citrus, herbs and a little browned butter.

Oyster Roast & Garlic Butter

Harvest only from an open approved area, keep oysters cold and cook thoroughly when health conditions or diners call for it.

The Five-Minute Launch Check

License, saltwater endorsement, species limits and tags checked in the live Texas Outdoor Annual.
Wind, thunderstorms, heat, surf, rip-current risk and the return window checked.
Measuring device, pliers, release tools, drinking water and sun protection within reach.
Launch, parking, beach-driving and access rules confirmed for the exact location.
Boat or kayak route avoids seagrass damage, ship traffic and an upwind return beyond the crew.
Someone ashore knows the water, launch, vehicle and expected return time.
Safety margin: rip currents are possible near the Isla Blanca and Boca Chica jetties, and South Texas weather can change quickly. When the safe route home starts shrinking, the fishing day is over.
