Colchuck Lake

The gateway drug to the Enchantments. Roots and rocks the whole way, then turquoise water under Dragontail Peak that does not look legal. Day-hikeable without the lottery.

Why choose this trail

A demanding Enchantments day hike. Follow the Stuart Lake Trail, branch toward Colchuck and climb rougher root-and-boulder tread to the lake. The shore beneath Dragontail Peak is the turnaround; Aasgard Pass is not part of this day-hike guide.

Landscape & habitat

Dry-side ponderosa and Douglas-fir give way to a granitic alpine basin. The lake's color comes from clear water over pale rock rather than a guarantee of warm or safe swimming.

Access, passes & rules

A federal parking pass is normally required. Overnight use in the Enchantments permit zone is tightly controlled; day hikers still need to follow posted self-issue or area requirements.

Conditions & hazards

The route is crowded, rocky and hot on exposed sections. Do not treat Aasgard Pass as a casual extension, especially with snow.
