Lake Serene

Two thousand feet of stairs somebody built into a mountain, with Bridal Veil Falls at the halfway mark. The lake sits in a cirque so sheer it feels indoors.

Why choose this trail

Waterfall and cirque scenery. The route shares its lower approach with Bridal Veil Falls, then climbs steep constructed steps into the Lake Serene cirque. Add the falls spur only if time and legs allow.

Landscape & habitat

Heavy west-slope precipitation supports dense hemlock, cedar, moss and fern before the trail reaches a cold basin walled by Mount Index. Spray and shade keep surfaces wet long after rain.

Access, passes & rules

A Northwest Forest Pass is normally required at the busy trailhead near Index. Parking fills early on fair weekends.

Conditions & hazards

Wet steps and roots are slick; winter and spring conditions add avalanche exposure above the forest.
