Maple Pass Loop

A loop that never stops paying — larches in October turn it into a pilgrimage. Walk it counter-clockwise so the climb is in the trees and the ridge is the victory lap.

Why choose this trail

Larch season and a full ridge loop. A true loop from Rainy Pass, climbing through forest past the Lake Ann junction and then traversing a long open ridge before descending. Counter-clockwise puts most of the sustained climbing in shade.

Landscape & habitat

The route crosses moist west-slope forest, subalpine meadow and wind-exposed ridge habitat. In autumn, subalpine larch needles turn gold before dropping—a brief seasonal event that also brings heavy visitation.

Access, passes & rules

A Northwest Forest Pass or accepted federal recreation pass is normally needed at Rainy Pass. Highway 20 and the trailhead are seasonal; verify both with the Forest Service and WSDOT.

Conditions & hazards

Early snow, lingering cornices and exposed ridge weather can change the character of this moderate summer loop quickly.
