Best for Jetty, pier and surf fishing without a bay boat
Water Gulf surf and the Brazos Santiago Pass
Isla Blanca Park is the practical South Padre base for reaching the north jetty and nearby Gulf surf. The access is straightforward; the water is not, especially when swell, current and slick granite combine.

Choose the water before the lure
Look for cuts in the bars, color changes, current seams and bait before choosing a casting lane. Pompano, whiting and other surf species can travel close, while jetty structure can hold sheepshead, drum and passing predators.
The pass can create powerful current and boat traffic. Give the channel room, keep gear compact and never let a promising bite override a deteriorating return route.
Jetty safety
- Check the Brownsville National Weather Service surf and rip-current outlook before leaving.
- Wear shoes with reliable wet-rock grip and keep both hands available while moving.
- Never turn your back on the Gulf; waves can wash much farther across the rocks than the previous set.
- Fish with another person when possible and stop before darkness, lightning or rising swell removes the margin.
Surf plan
- Fish troughs, bar cuts and points where current carries food rather than automatically casting as far as possible.
- Use enough weight to hold bottom without oversizing the whole rig.
- Keep beach-driving, parking and access rules separate from fishing rules; verify both for the exact entry point.
