South Bay rewards a quiet shallow-draft approach, but the same oysters, soft bottom, heat, wind and ship traffic that shape the habitat also shape the safety plan.

Why it fishes differently
Black mangrove edge, shallow seagrass and protected water can hold bait and juvenile fish. A kayak reaches water that a larger boat cannot, but shallow access does not mean easy footing or an easy return.
TPWD notes oyster concentrations and bottom that may not suit wading. Plan to stay with the craft instead of assuming every flat is walkable.
Paddle plan
- Check wind direction for both halves of the trip; a tailwind out can become a difficult exposed return.
- Carry a properly fitted life jacket, communication, drinking water, sun protection, navigation and a simple float plan left with someone ashore.
- Give the Brownsville Ship Channel and commercial traffic a very wide safety buffer.
- Launch only where access is legal and practical; do not cross private land to shorten the route.
Wildlife and habitat
- Expect a rich mix of shorebirds, waders and coastal wildlife, especially during migration.
- Keep distance from nesting and resting birds and avoid landing on sensitive flats.
