Shi Shi Beach
Mud, boardwalk, then a beach that ends at the Point of the Arches sea stacks. Camp it on a minus tide if you can — the tidepools run for a mile. Makah permit required.
Why choose this trail
A wild coast day or permitted overnight. The approach crosses forest and often-muddy headland trail before dropping to the beach. Point of the Arches adds distance along sand and is tide-dependent.
Landscape & habitat
Coastal forest gives way to surf zone, tidepool and sea-stack habitat. Intertidal organisms survive alternating immersion, exposure and wave force.
Access, passes & rules
A Makah Recreation Pass is required for access through tribal land; Olympic wilderness permits and bear canisters apply to overnight coastal camping. Use designated parking.
Conditions & hazards
Carry and understand a tide table. Headlands, logs, sneaker waves and cold water are the defining risks.
